Valkounsky House at Nerudova street, Bohumír Kozák, 1944

PAST

The house at the address Nerudova 211, also known as Valkounsky House, was named after the original owner, Knight Bohuchval Valkoun from Adlar.
The house was rebuilt in the 16th century, as all the neighboring houses were, after the massive fire of 1541 in the Little Quarter. The house acquired its Baroque shape during the years 1705–1723, when it was owned by a famous Czech Baroque architect, Jan Blažej Santini-Aichel

Santini’s major works represent the unique sacral architecture in Baroque Gothic style. Two places are on the UNESCO list.

When Santini died at age 46, a renowned goldsmith bought the house and built up the third floor.


This townhouse served its tenants until 2002, when careful reconstruction of the whole property commenced. The authentic wooden ceilings, fresco wall paintings, and an original porcelain cocklestove were discovered and renovated. During this reconstruction, the exquisite details were also restored – Medusa relief over the left entrance, a cartouche with house sign No. 211, and oval cartouche with a painting of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity above the second floor windows, along with the functional sundial placed on the façade.


For several years this building used to be ‘Hotel Santini’ until the COVID pandemic.

THE PRESENT

During the pandemic, the hotel was closed. And through the years, the building was falling into disrepair. Fortunately, in the spring of 2022 entrepreneurial married couple Jan and Sarah took over Valkounsky House, bringing back the elegance and tranquility and continuing its history. After renovating the building, they opened the hotel with the name ’Nerudova 211’ making Santini’s home accessible to the public once again.
